Remedial Massage

Remedial massage therapy is the assessment and treatment of pain and dysfunction in the muscles, fascia (connective tissue), ligaments and tendons. The soft tissues are prone to overuse, overloading, shortening or lengthening and this can produce all kinds of aches, pains and injuries. A client’s complaint is assessed via the most appropriate tests and these may include postural, biomechanical, and range of movement tests. These tests help identify the most likely cause of pain or injury.

If the assessment is consistent with pain or injury that is better dealt with by another health expert (chiropractor, osteopaths, podiatrists etc) then you will be referred to the most appropriate professional.

Common issues alleviated by Remedial Massage:

·         Muscle Impingement Sciatica

·         Range of Movement Issues

·         Frozen Shoulder

·         Rotator Cuff Injuries

·         Sporting Injuries - In the rehabilitation stages

·         Postural Imbalances

·         Repetitive Strain Injuries (Tennis Elbow, Tendonitis)

·         Bursitis

·         Iliopsoas Tension Disorders

Treatment expectations:

A session of remedial treatment lasts between 45 - 60 minutes depending on the presenting issue. On your first treatment, there will be a full medical consultation and history taking, appropriate testing and investigation, treatment plan, hands-on techniques and re-testing with aftercare advice. Please bring shorts with you for the consultation, and please try to avoid tight-fitting undergarments to allow manipulation of the full length of the soft tissues.

Treatment techniques:

• advanced consultation skills and appropriate safety checks

• assessment procedures to accurately identify conditions and injuries

• myofascial, neuromuscular and muscle energy techniques (MET)

• trigger point therapy

• proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)

• stretching

• active, passive and resisted mobilisations

• joint and spinal mobilisation techniques

The aim of Remedial Massage is to Remedy an Issue, the treatment itself can be challenging for the client. If you are looking for a relaxing, deep massage for general tension and muscular aches you may want to consider a deep tissue massage which works down through the layers of muscle and can focus on aches and pains built up over time from overuse, postural issues and working environments.

Do not come for a Remedial Massage if you are suffering from an acute injury. Always consult with your GP, or contact Elaine Wilson Therapies directly if you are unsure whether Remedial Treatment is right for you.

There will be times where it might not be safe to have a treatment, so in the interests of your care and well-being please visit the client information page if you have any health concerns.
